How do I cite an UpToDate article?

Answer

UpToDate recommends that you cite articles as you would a chapter in a book. AMA does not include a specific example for citing UpToDate. If using AMA, we recommend the following citation format, which includes elements of AMA guidance for citing a chapter of an edited book, a webpage, and an online source without a DOI:

  • Author(s): List the authors listed on the topic page
  • Article Title: List the title of the topic article
  • Editor: Connor RF should be listed as the editor, as she is the Senior Director of Clinical Content for UpToDate
  • Book Title: UpToDate
  • Publisher: Wolters Kluwer
  • Publication Date: Year of latest update to the article
  • Accessed Date:list the date you accessed the article

Example:

Rose M, Elkwood AI, Kaufman MR, Abdollahi, H. Foot drop: Etiology, diagnosis, and treatment. In Connor RF, ed. UpToDate. Wolters Kluwer; 2025. Accessed Aug. 29, 2025.
